Illinois to Mull Widening State Discipline Liability for Lawyers

Illinois lawyers who resign to avoid discipline in another jurisdiction could still face disciplinary action in the state if a proposal scheduled for discussion at a March hearing is approved.

The Illinois Supreme Court on Friday announced its Rules Committee will hold a public hearing March 29 to consider a proposal that aims to shed more light on when lawyers registered in Illinois are subject to reciprocal discipline.

The proposal would amend the Illinois Supreme Court’s rule on reciprocal disciplinary action, which was first adopted in 1973. The last time the rule was amended was in 2017.
