As Sam Ryder played the South Course at Torrey Pines in even-par in Friday’s third round of the Farmers Insurance Open, Jon Rahm made his move with his best round of the tournament so far. Rahm shot a six-under-par 66 to move into sole possession of second place at 10-under, two shots behind Ryder as the duo will play in the final pair in Saturday’s final round. Rahm has a chance to move back to the top of the Official World Golf Rankings this weekend and a victory on Saturday will give him the PGA Tour’s first three-peat since Dustin Johnson in 2017.

While Rahm put up a low number on moving day in the unusual Wednesday-Saturday event, the move of the day came from Tony Finau. The American just did survive the cutline on the number Thursday at even-par, but an eight-under 64 on Friday moved him into sole possession of third place.
Rahm needs a solo second-place finish in San Diego to move back to the No. 1 world ranking provided Rory McIlroy finishes worse than a solo third place at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. McIlroy had not started his second round when play was suspended by rain in Dubai on Friday and is tied for fourth at six-under.
After a solid opening round, defending champion Luke List has played at four over the last two rounds, including a 73 on the par-72 layout on Friday. He is tied for 39th at one under for the tournament
