Decadeslong attorney and community volunteer Joe Carmichael tonight was recognized with the 2023 Springfieldian Award.
Carmichael was recognized at the culmination of the annual meeting of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, which gives out the award, according to a news release. The event was held at Oasis Hotel & Convention Center.
President and law firm manager of Carmichael & Neal PC, Carmichael has more than 40 years of law industry experience. Also a certified public accountant, he’s served on the boards of organizations including Missouri State University, Legal Aid of Southwest Missouri, the Democratic National Committee, Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission, Missouri State Employees’ Retirement System and the Springfield-Branson National Airport.
“Joe Carmichael has been involved in so many things in our community for decades,” said former U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt in a video tribute played at the annual meeting. “He’s curious, analytical and he’s a real problem solver. There are all kinds of places in Springfield where you can see how those traits have really helped Joe make a difference.”
Carmichael also has been involved with the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association, the Missouri Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Southwest Chapter of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants, according to the release.
Carmichael joins other Springfieldian Award recipients, such as last year’s winner, Great Southern Bancorp Inc. (Nasdaq: GSBC) President and CEO Joe Turner, land developer Warren Davis, Springfield Underground leader Louis Griesemer and Hamra Enterprises founder Sam Hamra.
The Springfieldian Award is the chamber’s top honor and is given annually to an individual with strong community service, excellence in their field and dedication to improving quality of life for Springfield residents, according to the release.
The annual recipient is selected by a Springfieldian selection committee at the chamber after nominations are submitted.
